Alberta Hunting Draw Priority System

Alberta Hunting Draw Priority System

What is the Alberta Hunting Draw Priority System ? How Draw Priority Works, Priority Level, Draw Selection Process, Group Application, Resetting Priority

In the Alberta special licence draws, draw priority is a system that rewards hunters who persistently apply for the same special license year after year. Each year you apply and are not drawn, you gain a priority point for that specific license. This point increases your chances of being drawn in future draws for that same license. Example: If someone has a priority 3 on an antlered elk and they apply for a antlered elk special license in the zone that requires a priority level 4 to be guaranteed to be drawn. They will unlikely be drawn that year but when they apply the following year they will be guaranteed to be drawn as they will be a priority 4. So long as the priority level requirement in that zone has not changed.

How Draw Priority Works:

1. Accumulating Priority:
For each special license you apply for and are not drawn, you gain one priority point. This priority is linked to your Wildlife Identification Number (WiN). In order to ensure you are using your priority, you need to use your existing WiN and apply with the same WiN every year.

2. Priority Level:
Your priority level for a specific license is based on the number of years you have applied unsuccessfully since the last time you were drawn for that license, or since 1990, whichever is more recent. The draw priority you have going into the draw application is the priority you are applying with.

3. Draw Selection Process:
Licenses are first assigned to applicants with the highest priority within each WMU, area, or season. If there are remaining licenses after filling the highest priority, licenses are assigned to the next highest priority, and so on.

5. Group Application
The priority for the group application is that of the individual member whose priority is lowest.
If you are drawn for a special licence the authorization cannot be cancelled. You are not required to purchase your awarded licence(s), however:
- It will be considered sold and may affect your ability to purchase other licences of that species.
- Your priority will return to zero once drawn.

6. Resetting Priority:
If you are drawn for a special license, your priority level for that specific license is reset to zero, regardless of whether you purchase the license or not. If you do not apply for a special license, after years of building priority points, you do not lose the priority previously built but you do not gain any priority for that year.
